Wedding planning tips from a bride and photographer to stay stress free. Couple in Edinburgh Scotland

As a Melbourne based wedding photographer with over 10 years of experience, I’m often asked for my top tips on how to ensure couples get the best from their big day. In addition to my professional insight, I also got married myself . I planned a destination wedding in Scotland while living in Melbourne, and I regularly shoot in Edinburgh and Isle of Skye, so I know about planning overseas and locally. So, from both a photographer’s and a bride’s perspective, here are my essential tips for a smooth and stress-free wedding day, starting right from the beginning; so here are my Wedding planning tips from a bride and photographer to stay stress free

If you’ve just started planning your wedding, it’s a minefield of information, unsolicited advice and utter chaos. Where do you start I hear over and over again.

Take a deep breath.
Maybe make a cup of tea.
Possibly a cheeky glass of wine.

This is a honest brutal no fluff way of wedding advice. This article wasn’t written by AI but me a human and this comes from my experience as a wedding photographer who has shot in Melbourne, Tasmania, Isle of Skye, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and next year Iceland. So I know my stuff and logistics of planning locally and internationally.

Because the wedding industry can feel like stepping into a whirlwind of Pinterest boards, opinions from well-meaning relatives, spreadsheets, budgets, and “Wait… do we actually need a donut wall?”

After photographing a lot of weddings, being a bride (and witnessing the chaos + magic up close), I’ve learned there are a few things that make the biggest difference to couples actually enjoying their day. Ready for my top wedding planning tips from a bride and photographer to stay stress free.

So here are a few practical little nuggets I wish every couple knew at the start of their planning journey.

Not glamorous.
Not Pinteresty.
But incredibly helpful.

1. Choose your priorities first — not your vendors

Before booking anything, sit down together and ask:

“What do we want to remember about this day in 20 years?”

For some couples it’s the party.
For others it’s food.
For others it’s the ceremony or the scenery.

Pick 3 priorities each and let those guide your decisions. These are your top non negotiables.

Otherwise it’s very easy to end up planning a wedding that looks lovely… but doesn’t actually feel like you.

2. Your timeline will shape your entire experience

This one is huge and often overlooked.

The difference between a relaxed, joy-filled wedding and a stressful one often comes down to timing.

Things that help massively:

• Leave buffer time between events
• Avoid cramming too many locations into the day
• Allow time to actually talk to your guests
• Plan a quiet moment together after the ceremony

The best weddings always have breathing room.

Chaos is inevitable… but we can make space for the magic too.

3. Don’t try to please everyone

Family expectations, traditions, guest lists, opinions about flowers, cake, seating plans…

At some point someone will say:
“But weddings are supposed to be done this way.”

Here’s the truth:

Your wedding is not a performance.
It’s a celebration. It’s about you and your partner, you guys decided to make a commitment infant of people and they are invited to celebrate YOU not the other way around!

If something doesn’t feel like you — you’re allowed to change it. Smile say thank you for the advice and go and do what you want. Yes it gets complicated when family are helping to pay for things, money makes everything complicated. So you can always give people small tasks of certain things that way those that are contributing feel like they are in control of something. It’s all about navigating the tricky balance of feelings.

4. Build a team you actually like as humans

This one matters more than most people realise.

Your vendors will be the people standing next to you during some of the biggest moments of your life. Your vendors will probably spend more time with you on your day than your partner.

So yes — skill matters.
But so does energy.

Choose people who feel warm, calm, and genuinely excited for you.

The right team that makes the whole day flow better. Choose people over them not their popularity.

5. Something will go wrong — and that’s okay

I’ve seen rainstorms turn into the most romantic photos.

Veils blow away.

Buttons pop.

Timelines shift.

Wedding dresses that have ripped that I have actually sat and sewn up (true story!!)

And you know what?

Those moments often end up being the ones couples laugh about for the next 30 years.

Perfection isn’t what makes a wedding unforgettable.

The thing I hear next is which vendors do we book first, who will book out I’m scared the person I love won’t be available. Yes there a high chance your dream team might book up. So make a list of your top 3.

Top three celebrants

Top three Videographers

Top three Photographers

Top three make up artists etc…

Arrange it from 1st, 2nd and 3 rd choice. Nine times out of ten someone will be available and if not I am strong believer in the universe that it wasn’t meant to be. Do your due diligence, don’t pick them because they have the prettiest instagram or they dance around to trends. Some of the best highly skilled vendors I’ve worked with have a few hundred followers, a messy feed but they have the best reputation in the industry and are solidly booked out.

Your photographer and videographer know everyone in the industry they have worked with the best and the worst (I don’t like saying worst but sadly some people are and it’s the truth) If you see there’s is lots of negativity towards a vendor look into it more closely, never be afraid to ask your vendor outright if something is bothering you, if they cannot give a straight answer I would see that as a red flag.

Lighten Your List

You’re panicking because the wedding budget has suddenly blown out. Panic attack sets in….. calmmmmm please!! The easiest way to trim your wedding budget? Cut your guest list. Remember, half of your wedding expenses go to wining and dining your guests. If it’s costing you $150 per person, eliminating one table of 10 can save you $1,500. But also not everyone is going to say yes, there will be people that cannot make it. Also asses the plus 1 situation, I had a rule if I hadn’t met the partner or they had been together less than 2 years they didn’t get invited. It’s harsh but it was my non negotiable.

  • Wait for a Date

This is a little sneaky insider knowledge right here…..

Sometimes, last-minute planning can work in your favour—as long as you’re flexible. The closer your date, the more bargaining power you have. Since most people book their wedding venues at least six to 12 months in advance, calling for open dates two months prior to your desired time can save you up to 25 percent. And, Friday and Sunday weddings should cost about 30 percent less than Saturday weddings. (Wink wink)

Feeling everything fully is.

If you’re at the very start of planning and feeling a little overwhelmed — you’re not alone.

This whole process is a strange mix of spreadsheets, emotions, and beautiful chaos.

But it’s also the start of one very wonderful story.

And I’m always here if you need advice, vendor recommendations, timeline help, or just someone to say:

“Yep… totally normal.”

More wedding wisdom coming your way soon.

Big hugs,
Jenny
